Chan-wook Park’s Stoker

It’s an interesting combination of horror, drama and thriller written by none other than Prison Break star Wentworth Miller. The title of the movie alone should remind us of Dracula’s creator Bram Stoker, but this is their only connection.

The movie is about the family of the teenager India who is grieving the death of her father. Soon, her uncle, a stranger, comes to live with her and her unstable mother, played by Nicole Kidman, who has obviously craved another go at true horror after her brilliant role in Amenábar’s The Others.
Young India is becoming suspicious of her uncle’s intentions, at the same time getting obsessed with him. With uncle Charlie’s similarity to Norman Bates and allusions to Hamlet, both examples of Park’s postmodernist twists, it seems that the director has filmed an homage to western tradition of genre film and its key characters.
