This year, Fantastic Zagreb proudly presents Velimir Grgić’s 11th book Banzai Manzai!!! – Guide through Japanese comedy. Short synopsis explains how western ‘politically correct’ humour has not affected the indigenous Japanese comedy. Sadism, sexism, racism and animal cruelty are not the terms we are looking for when we want a few good laughs. How is it then that the Japanese have made them so hilarious and crucial in their modern comedy?
Japanese popular culture has formed on fascinating combinations of traditional and imported, assimilating western elements into everything from kitchens to dance moves. Comedy is no different – BANZAI MANZAI!!! will take you through a unique and fascinating world of Japanese comedy, a world in which Zen Buddhism meets the roots of national stand-up comedy called manzai.

Timo Vuorensola – Public funding in film industry

Timo

Iron Sky was a worldwide phenomenon originating from Finland, and spreading across the globe in theatres. One of the biggest factors of its success was the collaborative approach to the film. It was made by thousands of people collaborating over the Internet, bringing in their creativity, and later on, participating in the funding of the film, raising over 1,2 million € from the community across the world. Director Timo Vuorensola talks about his experiences in coordinating, collaborating and crowd financing a film over the Internet, and how this can be repeated by filmmakers everywhere.
The workshop will be held on Sunday, 30 June in the Müller hall of Cinema Europe.

ALEKSANDAR ŽILJAK: Blonde Vs. Gorilla – King Kong’s 80th birthday

žiljak

This year, on the 2nd of March, exactly 80 years have passed since the Merian Cooper’s and Ernest Shoedsack’s “King Kong” premiere. One giant Gorilla became the 20th century culture icon and the possible meaning of that revolutionary film remains even today. If we assume that King Kong is a metaphor for natural elements colliding with technology, is his fall from the Empire State Building, which is a symbol of mighty capitalism, the moment when mankind lost its soul?
Who are the people who made ”King Kong“? What were their lives like after ”King Kong“? What is “King Kong’s” influence on future films like ”Godzilla“? And finally, what does this giant ape mean to us today? Find out in Aleksandar Žiljak’s lecture: Blonde vs. Gorilla – King Kong’s 80th birthday.

PANEL: FOOD OF THE FUTURE

soylent-green

When talking about one of the main necessities of life – food, it may be strange to view it from an SF genre perspective. Last year, we saw ‘They Live’ with pilotless aircrafts, which had been seen as part of the conspiracy theory just a few years ago, but are absolutely real today. This year, we are going to see another timeless classic ‘Soylent Green’, which has been posing a question – how will our food look like in the future? Some think that it will not change, others believe humans won’t be needing it soon. The truth is probably in between and where exactly, it is for our experts on ‘Food of the future’ panel to answer. Will there be hunger, evolution, transformation of the consciousness? Find out.
